Read our Inquirer piece: We need city officials watching AI

Our op-ed was just published in the Philadelphia Inquirer, supercharging the conversation about AI before Wednesday’s first-ever City Council hearing on AI and the city.

In the piece, People’s Tech Organizing Director Devren Washington and Senior Attorney for civil rights and technology at TechTonic Justice Clarence Okoh lift up the dark side of AI:

  • We’re the product, not the users. AI is used on us, not by us.
  • AI reinforces racism, hurting Black and brown families who have their children taken away or loved ones surveilled because an algorithm said so.
  • Every AI tool is powered by resource-guzzling data centers that suck our water and electricity, poison our air, and hurt communities of color.

Philadelphia’s government is already using these tools, but with no public information, no public oversight, and no accountability. AI is watching us but no one is watching AI, and that has to change.

Nothing good happens in the dark, so help us bring the light:
